No directed fisheries are permitted under this quota. This species shall only be taken as by-catch within the following limits: a maximum of 2 500 kg or 10 %, whichever is greater. If, however, following quota transfers or exchanges or charter, directed fisheries are conducted, catches shall be reported separately (YEL/N3LNO-DIR) and the following shall apply: (a) a by-catch of 15 % of American plaice is permitted. However, if a fishing vessel is carrying an observer: (i) this maxima shall be 2 900 kg or 15 % of American plaice, whichever the greater; and (ii) a vessel may exceed the maxima referred to in point (i) for by-catches of American plaice retained on board during the first 9 fishing days in the NAFO Regulatory Area, provided that American plaice by-catch represents 15 % or less by the end of that period or when the vessel leaves the NAFO Regulatory Area, whichever occurs first; (b) the first two times that catches of American plaice comprise the largest percentage by weight of the total catch in a haul, such catches shall be considered as incidental catch, but the vessel shall immediately move a minimum of 10 nautical miles from any position of the previous haul throughout the subsequent haul.
This quantity is available to NAFO Contracting Parties that have not been allocated a quota for this stock, including the Union, and in accordance with applicable NAFO measures. If the Union is assigned an ‘Others’ quota, catches under this shared quota shall be reported separately (YEL/N3LNO-OTH). Once the ‘Others’ quota is exhausted, the by-catch limits shall be as follows: a maximum of 1 250 kg or 5 %, whichever is greater.

In order to protect juvenile swordfish, a closure period shall also apply to longline vessels targeting Mediterranean albacore from 1 October to 30 November. In addition, Mediterranean albacore, either as a targeted species or as by-catch, shall not be caught, retained on board, transhipped or landed during the following periods: — Greece, Croatia, Italy and Cyprus: 1 October to 30 November and 1 to 31 March; — Spain, France and Malta: 1 January to 31 March.
Each Member State shall limit the number of their fishing vessels authorised to fish for Mediterranean albacore to the number of fishing vessels authorised to fish this species in 2017. Member States may apply a tolerance of 10 % to this capacity limit.
Special condition: by-catches of albacore are to be counted against this quota, but shall be reported separately (ALB/MED-BC). Dead catches of albacore from sport and recreational fisheries are to be counted against this quota but shall be reported separately (ALB/MED-SR).

This annual TAC is only for exploratory fisheries, as defined in Article 4, point 11, of Regulation (EU) 2018/975 of the European Parliament and of the Council. Fishing shall be limited to depths between 600 m and 2 500 m. Fishing shall be limited to one trip of a maximum duration of 60 consecutive days which may occur any time between 1 May and 15 November. All fishing shall cease immediately if the death of the following occurs: (a) one of any of the following species: wandering albatross (Diomedea exulans), grey-headed albatross (Thalassarche chrysostoma), black-browed albatross (Thalassarche melanophris), grey petrel (Procellaria cinerea), soft-plumaged petrel (Pterodroma mollis); or (b) three individuals of any of the following species: light-mantled albatross (Phoebetria palpebrata), southern giant petrel (Macronectes giganteus) and northern giant petrel (Macronectes halli*).
Fishing shall further be limited to a maximum number of 5 000 hooks per set, with a maximum of 100 sets. Longlines shall be set at least 3 nautical miles apart from each other, and not set at previous longline locations within one calendar year. Of which up to 129 tonnes may be fished in research block A. As the catch limit for research block A is approached, shorter lines shall be set to ensure that the catch limit is not exceeded. Catches of toothfishes in research block A shall be reported separately (TOT/SPR-A).
