The Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 82(1) of the Pollution Control and Local Government (Northern Ireland) Order 1978[^f00001] and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following regulations:
Citation and commencement

These regulations may be cited as the Alkali, &c. Works and Clean Air (Metrication) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1994, and shall come into operation on 4th July 1994.
Interpretation

In these regulations—
- “the Alkali Act” means the Alkali, &c. Works Regulation Act 1906[^f00002];
- “the Clean Air Order” means the Clean Air (Northern Ireland) Order 1981[^f00003].
Amendments to the Alkali Act to substitute metric for imperial amounts

The provisions of the Alkali Act specified in Schedule 1 in column 1 shall be amended by substituting for the amounts expressed opposite thereto in column 2 the amounts expressed in the corresponding entry in column 3.
Amendments to the Clean Air Order to substitute metric for imperial amounts

The provisions of the Clean Air Order specified in Schedule 2 in column 1 shall be amended by substituting for the amounts expressed opposite thereto in column 2 the amounts expressed in the corresponding entry in column 3.
Revocation

The Alkali, &c. Works (Metrication) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1985[^f00004] are hereby revoked.

Explanatory note
(This note is not part of the Regulations.)
These regulations amend the Alkali, &c. Works Regulation Act 1906 and the Clean Air (Northern Ireland) Order 1981 to substitute amounts expressed in metric units for amounts not so expressed.
The regulations revoke the Alkali, &c. Works (Metrication) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1985.
The regulations implement in part Council Directive 80/181/EEC (O.J. No. L39/40) as modified by Council Directive 89/617/EEC (O.J. No. L357/28) on the approximation of the laws of Member States relating to units of measurement. Copies of the Directives and extracts from the Official Journal of the European Communities may be obtained from Her Majesty’s Stationery Office, 16 Arthur Street, Belfast BT1 4GD.
