The Public Health (Metrication) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1994

Coming into operation: 4th July 1994
The Department of the Environment, being a department designated[^f00001] for the purposes of section 2(2) of the European Communities Act 1972[^f00002] in relation to units of measurement to be used for economic, health, safety or administrative purposes, and the prefixes to be used with such units, in exercise of the powers conferred by that section, and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following regulations:
Citation and commencement

These regulations may be cited as the Public Health (Metrication) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1994, and shall come into operation on 4th July 1994.
Interpretation

The Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954[^f00003] shall apply to these regulations as it applies to a Measure of the Northern Ireland Assembly.
Amendment of the Public Health (Ireland) Act 1878

The Public Health (Ireland) Act 1878[^f00004] shall be amended as follows—
- (a) in section 25[^f00005] (power of district council to enforce drainage of undrained houses) for “one hundred feet” on both occasions where it occurs substitute “30.5 metres”;
- (b) in section 27[^f00005] (penalty on braiding house without drains in any district) for “one hundred feet” substitute “30.5 metres”; and
- (c) in Schedule C, Form E for “one hundred feet” substitute “30.5 metres”.
Amendment of the Public Health Acts Amendment Act 1907

The Public Health Acts Amendment Act 1907[^f00006] shall be amended as follows—
- (a) in section 18[^f00007] (crossing for cattle &c. over footways) for “four feet in width or two hundred-weight in weight” substitute “1.22 metres in width or 101.69 kilograms in weight”; and
- (b) in section 94(5) (power to license pleasure boats) for “one inch in height and three-quarters of an inch in breath” substitute “2.54 centimetres in height and 1.91 centimetres in breadth”.

Explanatory note
(This note is not part of the Regulations.)
These regulations amend the Public Health (Ireland) Act 1878 and the Public Health Acts Amendment Act 1907 to substitute amounts expressed in metric units for amounts not so expressed.
The regulations implement in part Council Directive 80/181/EEC (O.J. No. L39/40) as modified by Council Directive 89/617/EEC (O.J. No. L357/28) on the approximation of the laws of Member States relating to units of measurement.
