Citation and commencement

These Regulations may be cited as the Social Security (Industrial Injuries) (Prescribed Diseases) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 and shall come into operation on 30th March 2012.

Amendment of the Social Security (Industrial Injuries) (Prescribed Diseases) Regulations

In Part I of Schedule 1 to the Social Security (Industrial Injuries) (Prescribed Diseases) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1986[^f00003] (list of prescribed diseases and the occupations for which they are prescribed)—

A4. Task-specific focal dystonia of the hand or forearm. Prolonged periods of handwriting, typing or other repetitive movements of the fingers, hand or arm.
Work wholly or mainly fitting or laying carpets or floors (other than concrete floors) for a period of, or periods which amount in aggregate to, 20 years or more.
C3.(a) Phossy Jaw. Work involving the use or handling of, or exposure to, white phosphorous.
C3.(b) Peripheral polyneuropathy or peripheral polyneuropathy with pyramidal involvement of the central nervous system, caused by organic compounds of phosphorous which inhibit the enzyme neuropathy target esterase. Work involving the use or handling of, or exposure to, organic compounds of phosphorous.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

EXPLANATORY NOTE

These Regulations amend the Social Security (Industrial Injuries) (Prescribed Diseases) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1986 which prescribe diseases for which industrial injuries benefit is payable.

Regulation 2 adds the disease osteoarthritis of the knee, as it relates to carpet fitters and carpet and floor layers, to prescribed disease A14 (osteoarthritis of the knee) and makes amendments to the terms of prescription for prescribed diseases A4 (task-specific focal dystonia) and C3 (poisoning by phosphorous, organic and inorganic phosphorous compounds) in Part I of Schedule 1 to those Regulations.

These Regulations make in relation to Northern Ireland only provision corresponding to provision contained in Regulations made by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in relation to Great Britain and accordingly, by virtue of section 149(3) of, and paragraph 7 of Schedule 5A to, the Social Security Administration (Northern Ireland) Act 1992 (c. 8), are not subject to the requirement of section 149(2A) of that Act for prior reference to the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council.
