The Road Vehicles Lighting (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2019

Coming into operation: 18th March 2019

The Department for Infrastructure[^f00001] makes the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by Articles 55(1), (2), (4) and (6) and 110(2) of the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1995[^f00002] and now vested in it[^f00003].

Citation and commencement

These Regulations may be cited as the Road Vehicles Lighting (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2019 and shall come into operation on 18th March 2019.

• (1) The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000[^f00004] are amended in accordance with paragraphs (2) to (4).

• (2) In regulation 2(1) (interpretation) after “the 1995 Order” insert—

• “the Haulage Permits and Trailer Registration Act” means the Haulage Permits and Trailer Registration Act 2018[^f00005];

• (3) In regulation 13(2)[^f00006] (colour of light shown by lamps and reflectors) after sub-paragraph (sa) insert—

(sb) reflected light from a registration plate fixed to the rear of a trailer displaying a registration mark assigned to that trailer in accordance with regulations made under section 15 of the Haulage Permits and Trailer Registration Act;

• (4) After paragraph 12 of Schedule 15 (requirements relating to obligatory rear registration plate lamps) add—

(13) In this Schedule a reference to a rear registration plate does not include a registration plate fixed to the rear of a trailer displaying a registration mark assigned to that trailer in accordance with regulations made under section 15 of the Haulage Permits and Trailer Registration Act.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

EXPLANATORY NOTE

These Regulations amend the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000 to remove the requirement to illuminate the trailer registration plate.

The amendment is required as a consequence of the Trailer Registration Scheme which was introduced by the Trailer Registration Regulations 2018 (S.I. 2018/1203).
