The Climate Change (2040 Emissions Target) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2024

Made: 11th December 2024

Coming into operation in accordance with regulation 1(2)

Before being laid before the Assembly, the Department requested, and took into account, advice from the Committee on Climate Change, in accordance with section 56(2) of the Act.

Citation and commencement

• (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Climate Change (2040 Emissions Target) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2024.

• (2) These Regulations come into operation on the day after the day on which they are made.

Setting of the target for 2040

In section 3 of the Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022, for “in line with the target for the year 2050” substitute “at least 77% lower than the baseline”.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

EXPLANATORY NOTE

These Regulations amend Part 1 of the Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022 to set the emissions reduction target for 2040 as a percentage. This implements a recommendation from the UK Committee on Climate Change.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs has carried out the required impact assessments and conducted a 16-week public consultation.
