The Weights and Measures (Prescribed Stamp) Regulations 1968

Made: 11th October 1968

Coming into Operation: 1st February 1969

The Board of Trade, in pursuance of the powers conferred upon them by sections 11(3) and 58 of the Weights and Measures Act 1963 and all other powers enabling them in that behalf, hereby make the following Regulations:—

The stamp prescribed for use by inspectors for the stamping of weighing and measuring equipment which has been passed as fit for use for trade shall be—

• (a) in the case of a stamp for the stamping of a measure made of glass, earthenware or enamelled metal, either a stamp in the form described in Schedule 1 to these Regulations or a stamp in the form described in Schedule 2 hereto;

• (b) in the case of a stamp for the stamping of any other weighing or measuring equipment, a stamp in the form described in Schedule 2 hereto.

The Weights and Measures (Prescribed Stamp) Regulations 1963[^f00001] are hereby revoked.

• (1) The Interpretation Act 1889 shall apply to the interpretation of these Regulations in like manner as it applies to the interpretation of an Act of Parliament and as if these Regulations and the Regulations hereby revoked were Acts of Parliament.

• (2) These Regulations may be cited as the Weights and Measures (Prescribed Stamp) Regulations 1968 and shall come into operation on the 1st February 1969.

SCHEDULE 1 — ALTERNATIVE FORM OF STAMP FOR USE BY INSPECTORS FOR STAMPING GLASS, EARTHENWARE OR ENAMELLED METAL MEASURES

A stamp comprising

(i) a crown in the form indicated below; and

(ii) subjacent to the said crown, an identification mark consisting of numerals (or, with the approval of the Board, some other device) identifying the inspector concerned.

SCHEDULE 2 — FORM OF STAMP FOR USE BY INSPECTORS GENERALLY

A stamp comprising—

(i) a crown in the form of the diagram set out in Schedule 1; and

(ii) in close proximity to the said crown, a date mark consisting of numerals indicating the year and (if so desired) the month in which the equipment is stamped; and

(iii) subjacent to the said crown an identification mark consisting of numerals (or with the approval of the Board of Trade, some other device) identifying the inspector concerned.

Explanatory note

EXPLANATORY NOTE

These Regulations prescribe the form of stamp to be used by inspectors of weights and measures for stamping weighting and measuring equipment which they have passed as fit for use for trade.

They replace the Weights and Measures (Prescribed Stamp) Regulations 1963.

The only change is that the form of stamp employed to stamp glass, earthenware or enamelled metal measures need not include any indication of the year in which the stamp is applied.
