The Secretary of State for Social Services, in exercise of powers conferred by section 101 of the Social Security Act 1973, hereby makes the following order:—

Citation and commencement

This order may be cited as the Social Security Act 1973 (Commencement) Order 1973 and shall come into operation on 19th July 1973.

Appointed days

The day appointed for the coming into force of any provision of the Social Security Act 1973 specified in column 1 of the Schedule to this Order shall be the date specified in column 3 of that Schedule in relation to that provision.

Where any provision specified in column 1 of that Schedule contains a reference to “the appointed day” that day shall be the day specified in column 3 of that Schedule in relation to that provision.

Explanatory note

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This Order brings into force on 6th April 1975 the provisions of the Social Security Act 1973 relating to basic scheme contributions, the crediting of contributions, the contribution conditions for basic scheme benefit, reserve scheme contributions and premiums, married women and widows, and the review of provision for the chronically sick and disabled. It also brings into operation immediately provisions relating to the making of regulations and orders, the Parliamentary control of them, reference of them to the National Insurance Advisory Committee, and the interpretation, citation and commencement of the Act and the application of Parts II and III of the Act to Northern Ireland.
