The Secretary of State, in exercise of powers conferred by section 427 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1894 as substituted by section 2 of the Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) Act 1949 and amended by section 9 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1964 and now vested in him[^f00001], and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Rules:—

These Rules may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Life-Saving Appliances) (Amendment) Rules 1977 and shall come into operation on 11th March 1977.

The Merchant Shipping (Life-Saving Appliances) Rules 1965[^f00002] as amended[^f00003], shall be further amended as follows:—

Explanatory note

EXPLANATORY NOTE

These Rules further amend the Merchant Shipping (Life-Saving Appliances) Rules 1965 by providing for the phasing out, in two stages, of liferafts the inflatable chambers or floors of which are made of rubber-proofed cotton, so that by 1st July 1979 all liferafts of that type shall cease to comply with the requirements of those Rules.
