The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Secretary of State for Wales, acting jointly, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 1(3) of the Protection of Animals (Anaesthetics) Act 1954[^f00001] and now vested in them[^f00002], and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, after consultation in accordance with the said section 1(3) with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and with such persons appearing to them to represent agricultural interests as appear to them appropriate, hereby make the following order:—

Title and commencement

This order may be cited as the Protection of Animals (Anaesthetics) Act 1954 (Amendment) Order 1982 and shall come into operation on 1st January 1983.

Amendment

In paragraph 6 of the First Schedule to the Protection of Animals (Anaesthetics) Act 1954[^f00003] (which specifies the ages before which the castration of certain male animals may be carried out without the use of an anaesthetic) for the words “3 months” appearing opposite the word “bull” there shall be substituted the words “2 months”.

Explanatory note

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This order amends the Protection of Animals (Anaesthetics) Act 1954 by reducing the age before which bulls may be castrated without the use of an anaesthetic from 3 months to 2 months.
