Coming into Operation: 1st December 1983

The Secretary of State for Transport, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 63(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1972[^f00001] and now vested in him[^f00002], and of all other enabling powers, and after consultation with representative organisations in accordance with the provisions of section 199(2) of that Act, hereby makes the following Regulations:—

These Regulations shall come into operation on 1st December 1983 and may be cited as the Motor Vehicles (Designation of Approval Marks) (Amendment) Regulations 1983.

The Motor Vehicles (Designation of Approval Marks) Regulations 1979[^f00003] shall be amended so as to have effect in accordance with the following provisions of these Regulations.

(18) In relation to the marking prescribed at item 50, “11” shall appear above the circle where the direction indicator is fitted to the front of the vehicle, “12” shall appear above the circle where the direction indicator is fitted to the rear of the vehicle and “31” shall appear above the circle where the direction indicator is fitted to the side of the vehicle. In the case of a direction indicator which does not on one side attain the minimum luminous intensity prescribed up to a minimum horizontal angle for spacial light distribution H=80° (according to paragraph 7.7.1 of, and Annex 1 to ECE Regulation 50), a horizontal arrow shall appear, the tip of which is oriented to the side where the minimum luminous intensity according to the said paragraph 7.7.1. is complied with up to an angle of at least 80°. (19) In relation to the marking prescribed at item 50A, the letter “M” shall appear on a lamp being a rear position lamp for a moped that has a minimum value of 2 cd.

Explanatory note

EXPLANATORY NOTE

1 These Regulations further amend the Motor Vehicles (Designation of Approval Marks) Regulations 1979.

2 By virtue of these amendments (see Regulation 3):— a the markings designated in respect of reflex reflectors in items 3A and 3B in Schedule 2 are corrected; b new markings relating to filament lamps to be used for certain lights of mopeds and motor cycles are prescribed (by adding items 37B and 37C in Schedule 2) in consequence of an amendment dated 29 October 1981 to ECE Regulation 37; c a new marking relating to a child restraint is prescribed (by adding item 44A in Schedule 2) in consequence of an amendment dated 17 November 1982 to ECE Regulation 44; d a new marking relating to direction indicators for mopeds and motor cycles is prescribed (by adding item 50 in Schedule 2) in consequence of ECE Regulation 50 dated 11 January 1983; and e a new marking relating to front and rear position lamps, stop lamps and rear registration plate illuminating devices for mopeds and motor cycles is prescribed (by adding item 50A in Schedule 2) in consequence of ECE Regulation 50.

3 As a result of those amendments, Schedule 3 (which deals with requirements and permitted variations) is amended (see Regulation 4).
