The Inner Urban Areas (Designated Districts) Order 1983

Made: 3rd March 1983

Laid before Parliament: 11th March 1983

Coming into Operation: 1st April 1983

The Secretary of State for the Environment, being satisfied as respects each district mentioned in Article 2 of this order that it includes the whole or part of an inner urban area in which special social need exists, and that the conditions giving rise to the existence of that need could be alleviated by the exercise of the powers conferred by the Inner Urban Areas Act 1978, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 1(1) and 15 of that Act, and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following order:—

This order may be cited as the Inner Urban Areas (Designated Districts) Order 1983 and shall come into operation on 1st April 1983.

The districts of Burnley, Coventry, Knowsley, Langbaurgh and Walsall are hereby specified as designated districts for the purposes of the Inner Urban Areas Act 1978.

Explanatory note

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This Order designates five further districts for the purposes of the Inner Urban Areas Act 1978.

Districts may be designated under this Act by the Secretary of State if he is satisfied they include an inner urban area in which social needs exist and the conditions giving rise to those needs may be alleviated by the use of the powers afforded by the Act. These powers enable the district and county council to make grants and loans for a variety of purposes including e.g. the cost of works on land.

Once a district has been designated, “special areas” and “improvement areas” may be established. Further powers to make loans or grants are exercisable in relation to such areas.
