The Prison (Amendment) Rules 1987

Made: 16th July 1987

Laid before Parliament: 22nd July 1987

Coming into force: 13th August 1987

In pursuance of sections 25(1) and 47 of the Prison Act 1952[^f00001]I hereby make the following Rules:

These Rules may be cited as the Prison (Amendment) Rules 1987 and shall come into force on 13th August 1987.

Rule 5 of the Prison Rules 1964^f00002 shall be amended by inserting in paragraph (2)(a)—

• (a) at the beginning, the words “in the case of a sentence for a term of more than 12 months,” and

• (b) after the word “imprisonment)”, the words “and in the case of a sentence for a term not exceeding 12 months, one-half of that total”.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Rules)

These Rules amend rule 5 (remission of sentence) of the Prison Rules 1964 so as to increase from one-third to one-half the remission which may be granted in relation to sentences for a term of 12 months or less.
