In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by sections 18 and 35(4) of the Education Act 1980[^f00001], the Secretary of State for Education and Science, as respects England, and the Secretary of State for Wales, as respects Wales, hereby make the following Regulations:

For paragraphs (3) and (4) of regulation 3 of the principal Expenses Regulations (uniform grants) there shall be substituted the following paragraphs—

In regulation 4(5) of the principal Expenses Regulations (school travel grants) for the sums “£6,819” and “£6,638” there shall be substituted the sums “£6,985” and “£6,804” respectively.

In regulation 5(2) of the principal Expenses Regulations (remission of charges for meals) for the sum “£5,773” there shall be substituted the sum “£5,917”.

In regulation 7(1) of the principal Expenses Regulations after the words “a normal course of study at a school for” there shall be inserted the words “the examinations for the General Certificate of Secondary Education,” and for the word “thereto” there shall be substituted the words “to any of them”.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations further amend the Education (Assisted Places) (Incidental Expenses) Regulations 1985 and come into force on 15th August 1987 (regulation 1).

The means tests for uniform grants, school travel grants and the remission of charges for meals are relaxed (regulations 2 to 4).

The remission of charges for field study courses is extended to courses for examinations for the General Certificate of Secondary Education (regulation 5).
