The Secretary of State for Transport makes this Scheme in exercise of the powers conferred by section 16 of the Highways Act 1980[^f00001], and now vested in him[^f00002], and of all other enabling powers:

The M3 Motorway (Popham—Hockley Section) Scheme 1973[^f00003] is hereby varied by deleting therefrom all provisions relating to the section of the Motorway (as defined in that Scheme) between Bar End and Hockley described in the Schedule to this Scheme.

This Scheme shall come into force on 21st August 1987 and may be cited as the M3 Motorway (Popham—Hockley Section) (Variation) Scheme 1987.
SCHEDULE
The section of the route to be deleted is the section, about 2.15 kilometres in length, starting at a point on the southwest of Basingstoke—Southampton Trunk Road (A33) (the “Winchester Bypass”) at Bar End in the County of Hampshire about 370 metres north-east of its junction with Garnier Road in the City of Winchester and proceeding in a general south-westerly direction on the western side of the Winchester Bypass (A33), passing to the west of St Catherine’s Hill, to end at a point about 450 metres south of the Winchester—Portsmouth Road (A333) at Hockley in the County of Hampshire.

Explanatory note
(This note is not part of the Scheme)
This Scheme varies the M3 Motorway (Popham—Hockley Section) Scheme 1973, which is a Scheme made under section 11 of the Highways Act 1959 (c. 25) authorising the provision of a special road along a route between Popham and Hockley in the County of Hampshire as part of the M3 motorway. That route is more particularly described in the Schedule to that Scheme and shown by a heavy black line on the deposited plan to that Scheme.
