In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by section 22(4) of the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act 1979[^f00001], I hereby approve the following Rules made by the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting, namely: the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors (Registered Fever Nurses) Amendment Rules 1989 set out in Schedule 1 hereto; and the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors (Training) Amendment Rules 1989 set out in Schedule 2 hereto.

This Order may be cited as the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors (Registered Fever Nurses Amendment Rules and Training Amendment Rules) Approval Order 1989 and shall come into force on 1st September 1989.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Order)

The Rules approved by this Order, and made by the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting, further amend the Rules approved by the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Rules Approval Order 1983 (“the principal Rules”).

The Rules set out in Schedule 1 to this Order amend Rule 6 of the principal Rules (admission to Part or Parts of the register following the successful completion of an approved course of training) by inserting a new paragraph 1(C) which provides for the admission to Part 9 of the register of nurses who trained and qualified as fever nurses before 1 July 1983.

The Rules set out in Schedule 2 to this Order make amendments to the principal Rules to make provision for the introduction of a new form of training to prepare student nurses for entry to Parts 12 to 15 of the register. In particular, new Rules 14A and 18A are inserted into the principal Rules, respectively, to provide for the nature of the course of preparation to be followed by students seeking entry to those Parts of the register, and to prescribe the various nursing skills which a course of preparation is to instil in any student. Amendments are also made to Rule 19 of the principal Rules to make further provision in connection with the number of occasions on which a student nurse may attempt any examination, and to Rules 16, 22 and 30 of the principal Rules to include the General Certificate of Secondary Education among the educational qualifications on the basis of which a person may enter training with a view to registration as a nurse, midwife or health visitor.

Extensive minor amendments to the principal Rules are made in connection with or consequential upon the foregoing matters.
