Made: 27th April 1993

Coming into force in accordance with Article 1(2)

Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 17(2) and 233 of the said Act and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, the Secretary of State hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement

  • (1) This Order may be cited as the Lothian Region (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1993.
  • (2) This Order shall come into force on 5th May 1994 provided that for the purpose of all proceedings preliminary or relating to an election to be held on or after that day the Order shall come into force on 10th October 1993.

Interpretation

In the Schedule to this Order–

  • (a) a reference to–
  • (i) an electoral division shall be construed as a reference to that electoral division as constituted in this Order;
  • (ii) a road, footpath, railway line, river, burn or canal shall, where the context so admits, be construed as the centre line of the feature concerned; and
  • (iii) the boundary or boundaries of a parish is to a line corresponding as nearly as may be to the line of the boundary or boundaries of the parish concerned as already published on Ordnance Survey Maps;
  • (b) the expedient of defining a line beyond Mean Low Water Springs has been adopted to apportion islands to the appropriate electoral division; and
  • (c) the following abbreviations are used:–
  • “ED” for Electoral Division; and
  • “grid reference” for National Grid Reference as published on Ordnance Survey Maps.

Change of electoral arrangements

The existing electoral divisions of the Lothian Region shall be abolished and the said Region shall be divided into forty-nine electoral divisions having the names, contents and boundaries set forth in the Schedule to this Order.

The boundaries of the electoral divisions constituted by this Order shall be defined and mered by Ordnance Survey.

Revocation

Without prejudice to its continuing in effect for the purposes of defining the electoral divisions prior to the coming into force of this Order, the Lothian Region (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1978([^f00002]) is hereby revoked.

SCHEDULE — DESCRIPTIONS OF BOUNDARIES OF ELECTORAL DIVISIONS FOR

Electoral Division 1: Linlithgow/Winchburgh

Commencing on the northern boundary of Lothian Region and West Lothian District at the northwestern boundary of the said district; then generally eastward along the northern boundary of the said region and district to and generally southward along the eastern boundary of West Lothian District to the Union Canal at grid reference NT 0929 7335; then northwestward in a straight line to grid reference NT 0798 7399 on the eastern boundary of the former parish of Ecclesmachan; then northwestward on the said former parish boundary to grid reference NT 0769 7424 where the prolongation of the track leading to Glendevon Cottages intersects the said former parish boundary on the unclassified road to the west of Fauchledean; then northeastward on the said track to where it intersects the dismantled railway passing south of Glendevon Cottages; then generally northwestward and northeastward on the said dismantled railway to its intersection with the northern boundary of the former parish of Ecclesmachan on an unnamed burn; then generally northwestward, westward, southward and westward on the said former parish boundary to the Ecclesmachan burn at grid reference NT 0328 7393; then northwestward along the property boundary to and generally northwestward along the track and road leading to and past Ochiltree Mill to its junction with an unclassified road; then northward along the said unclassified road to its junction with the unclassified road southwest of Wester Ochiltree; then generally westward and southwestward passing to the south of property known as Riccarton and westward to the junction of the unclassified road east of the property known as Ferniebank; then southward and southwestward along said road to where it meets the Crinkle Burn on the northwest edge of Ballencrieff Reservoir at grid reference NS 9788 7108; then generally westward along said burn to its confluence with Couston Water; then generally northwestward along the said water to wherethe Couston Water is crossed by the A801 road; then northward along the said A801 road past Avoncrook on the west to where it crosses the Brunton Burn; then generally northwestward along the said burn to its confluence with the River Avon and the western boundary of Lothian Region and West Lothian District north of Crawhill Farm; then generally northeastward along the said western boundary of Lothian Region and West Lothian District to the point of commencement.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order gives effect to proposals made by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland, for the change of electoral arrangements for the Lothian Region (the Region) as described in the Schedule to the Lothian Region (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1978 (the 1978 Order).

The effect of the proposals is to divide the Region into 49 electoral divisions as described in the Schedule to the Order.

The 1978 Order is revoked by this Order.
