Made: 6th June 1993

Coming into force in accordance with Article 1(2)

Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 17(2) and 233 of the said Act and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, the Secretary of State hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement

  • (1) This Order may be cited as the Borders Region (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1993.
  • (2) This Order shall come into force on 5th May 1994 provided that for the purpose of all proceedings preliminary or relating to an election to be held on or after that day the Order shall come into force on 10th October 1993.

Interpretation

In the Schedule to this Order–

  • (a) a reference to–
  • (i) an electoral division shall be construed as a reference to that electoral division as constituted in this Order;
  • (ii) a road, footpath, railway line, river, burn or canal shall, where the context so admits, be construed as the centre line of the feature concerned; and
  • (iii) the boundary or boundaries of a parish is to a line corresponding as nearly as may be to the boundary or boundaries of the parish concerned as already published on Ordnance Survey Maps; and
  • (b) the following abbreviations are used:–
  • “ED” for Electoral Division; and
  • “grid reference” for National Grid Reference as published on Ordnance Survey Maps.

Change of electoral arrangements

The existing electoral divisions of Borders Region shall be abolished and the said Region shall be divided into twenty-seven electoral divisions having the names, contents and boundaries set forth in the Schedule to this Order.

The boundaries of the electoral divisions constituted by this Order shall be defined and mered by Ordnance Survey.

Revocation

Without prejudice to its continuing in effect for the purposes of defining the electoral divisions prior to the coming into force of this Order, the Borders Region (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1977([^f00002]) is hereby revoked.

SCHEDULE — DESCRIPTIONS OF BOUNDARIES OF ELECTORAL DIVISIONS FOR BORDERS REGION

ED 1: Peebles North

Commencing at grid reference NT 2398 4068; then generally northwestward along the minor road leading from the A72 road past Jedderfield; then generally northward along the eastern boundary of Jedderfield Plantation to field boundaries leading eastward from grid reference NT 2354 4143; then eastward, southward and eastward along said field boundaries to the northeast corner of the strip of woodland east of Elliot’s Park Farm at grid reference NT 2435 4131; then generally northward along the western boundary of Rosetta Caravan Park to the Gill Burn at grid reference NT 2423 4163; then along the Gill Burn where it goes under Rosetta Road; then generally southeastward along Rosetta Road to a point north of Violet Bank at grid reference NT 2461 4138; then generally northeastward along an unnamed burn to and along the northern boundary of the woodland on the east bank of the Eddleston Water to the western curtilage of the property known as Ferndene; then northward and eastward along the western and northern curtilages of the said property to and northward along the Edinburgh Road to the northern curtilage of No 72, Edinburgh Road; then northeastward along said curtilage to and generally southward along the rear curtilages of properties on the east side of Edinburgh Road to Venlaw High Road; then southeastward along Venlaw High Road to and continuing southeastward along the northern boundaries of the property known as Drum More, of Venlaw Quarry and of Peebles Hydropathic to the eastern boundary of the hotel grounds; then southeastward along to the eastern boundary of the hotel grounds and the adjoining field boundary, passing to the north of Soonhope, to the access road to Soonhope; then southward along the said access road to and eastward along the northern curtilage of Soonhope Cottage; then continuing eastward and southward along the disused railway to Innerleithen Road at grid reference NT 2640 4018; then eastward along the Inner-leithen Road to grid reference NT 2751 3978; then northward along the western boundary of the strip of woodland to grid reference NT 2747 4023; then generally southeastward to grid reference NT 2804 4010; then generally southward to the A72 road, crossing the road and following the western boundary of the wooded area to the former railway line at grid reference NT 2807 3902; then generally westward along the line of the former railway to grid reference NT 2722 3957; then generally southwestward to the River Tweed; then generally westward along the said river to Tweed Bridge; then northward along the B7062 to and northward and westward along the A72 road to its junction with Young Street, northward along Young Street, northeastward along Cross Road, generally northward along Montgomery Place, westward along March Street, northward along Rosetta Road to the junction with Kirkland Street, and then westward along Kirkland Street and continuing along the southern boundary of Peebles Golf Course to the point of commencement

ED 4: West Tweeddale

NOTE:ED 4 (West Tweeddale) occupies the area defined by the description given above with the exception of the area occupied by ED 1 (Peebles North) and ED 2 (Peebles South).

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order gives effect to proposals mffiade by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland for a change to electoral arrangements for the Borders Region (the Region) as described in the Schedule to the Borders Region (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1977 (the 1977 Order).

The effect of the proposals is to divide the Region into 27 electoral divisions as described in the Schedule to this Order.

The 1977 Order is revoked by this Order.
