The European Parliamentary Elections (Northern Ireland) (Amendment) Regulations 1994

Coming into force: 15th March 1994

Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred upon me by paragraph 2 of Schedule 1 to the European Parliamentary Elections Act 1978[^f00001], I hereby make the following Regulations:

• (1) These Regulations may be cited as the European Parliamentary Elections (Northern Ireland) (Amendment) Regulations 1994.

• (2) These Regulations shall come into force on the day after the day on which they are made.

• (3) These Regulations extend to Northern Ireland only.

In the right-hand column of Schedule 1 (application with modifications of provisions of the Representation of the People Acts) to the European Parliamentary Elections (Northern Ireland) Regulations 1986[^f00002]—

• (a) the modifications of sections 49 and 50 of the Representation of the People Act 1983[^f00003], as applied by the left-hand column of that Schedule, shall be omitted; and

• (b) in subsection (2) of section 76 (limitation of election expenses) of that Act, as substituted, for the words “£10,000” and “4.3p”[^f00004], there shall be substituted the words “£13,175” and “5.7p”, respectively.

In the European Parliamentary Elections (Northern Ireland) (Amendment) Regulations 1989[^f00005], regulation 2(a) shall be omitted.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations, which apply in Northern Ireland only, amend the European Parliamentary Elections (Northern Ireland) Regulations 1986.

Regulation 2(a) omits from Schedule 1 to the 1986 Regulations modifications which are no longer appropriate as a result of changes to the system of registration made by section 2 of, and Schedule 1 to, the Elected Authorities (Northern Ireland) Act 1989 (c. 3).

Regulation 2(b) increases the maximum amount of a candidate’s election expenses at a European Parliamentary election. The maximum amount of a candidate’s election expenses is made up of a fixed sum (expressed in pounds) plus a sum expressed in pence (and fractions of pence) for each entry in the register of electors. Regulation 3 omits the provision by which that maximum amount was last increased.
