Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order gives effect to recommendations by the Local Government Commission for England for boundary and electoral changes in the city of Peterborough (“the city”).

Article 2 makes changes to the boundaries of the parishes of Peakirk, Castor and Bretton.

Article 3 abolishes all the existing wards of the city and provides for the creation of twenty-four new wards. That article and Schedule 1 also make provision for the names and areas of, and number of councillors for, the new wards.

Prints of the map on which the boundary changes, and district warding arrangements, are shown may be inspected at all reasonable times at the offices of the Peterborough City Council and at the offices of the Secretary of State for the Environment which, until May 1997, are located at 2 Marsham Street, London SW1P 3EB and, thereafter, at 2nd Floor, Ashdown House, 123 Victoria Street, London SW1E 6DE.

Article 4 makes provision for a whole council election in the city in 1997 and for reversion to elections by thirds in subsequent years.

Article 5 abolishes the existing wards of the parish of Bretton and provides for the creation of two new parish wards. Articles 6 and 7 provide for the division of the parishes of Orton Longueville and Orton Waterville into two and five parish wards respectively.

Article 8 provides for elections of parish councils in the city.

Article 9 amends the Cambridgeshire (City of Peterborough) (Structural, Boundary and Electoral Changes) Order 1996 to replace references to wards of the city which are abolished by this Order with references to the appropriate new ward.
