This Order affects one enterprise zone in Sunderland (Hylton Riverside and Southwick), one in North Tyneside (Baltic Enterprise Park), and three at the Viking Industrial Park in South Tyneside (Wagonway West, Blackett Street and Western Road).

The Tyne and Wear Development Corporation was designated as the enterprise zone authority for those zones in the Sunderland (Hylton Riverside and Southwick) Enterprise Zone (Designation) Order 1990 and the Tyne Riverside Enterprise Zones (North Tyneside and South Tyneside) (Designation) Order 1996.

The Tyne and Wear Development Corporation is to be dissolved by an Order under section 166 of the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980. The Urban Development Corporations in England (Planning Functions) Order 1998 (S.I. 1998 No. 84) revokes the planning functions order and special development order relating to the Corporation on 25th March 1998.

This Order designates the district council for each zone as the enterprise zone authority, in place of the Corporation as from that date.
