The Police and Justice Act 2006 (Commencement No. 1) (England) Order 2009

The Secretary of State makes the following Order in exercise of the power conferred by section 53(1) of the Police and Justice Act 2006[^f00001].

Citation

This Order may be cited as the Police and Justice Act 2006 (Commencement No. 1) (England) Order 2009.

Commencement

The following provisions of the Police and Justice Act 2006 shall come into force on 30 April 2009 in so far as they relate to England —

• (a) section 19 (local authority scrutiny of crime and disorder matters);

• (b) section 20 (guidance and regulations regarding crime and disorder matters);

• (c) section 21 (joint crime and disorder committees); and

• (d) Schedule 8 (further provision about crime and disorder committees of certain local authorities).

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Order)

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This Order brings into force, in so far as they relate to England, sections 19 and 20 of the Police and Justice Act 2006 (“2006 Act”) which relate to the establishment of crime and disorder committees of local authorities, and section 21 of the 2006 Act, which amends section 5 of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 (authorities responsible for crime and disorder strategies). The amendment provides that the Secretary of State may by order require that two or more local councils appoint a joint crime and disorder committee of those councils to carry out the functions exercisable by a committee established under section 19 of the 2006 Act.

This Order also brings into force Schedule 8 of the 2006 Act which sets out further provision about crime and disorder committees of certain local authorities.
