The Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (Alteration of Coroner Areas) Order 2022

The Lord Chancellor, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 176(3)(a) of, and paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 to, the Coroners and Justice Act 2009[^f00001], and after consulting in accordance with that paragraph, makes the following Order:

Citation and Commencement

This Order may be cited as the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (Alteration of Coroner Areas) Order 2022 and comes into force on 1st April 2022.

Interpretation

In this Order—

• “coroner area” means a coroner area specified in the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (Coroner Areas and Assistant Coroners) Transitional Order 2013[^f00002];

• “new coroner area” means the new coroner area resulting from the combining of the coroner areas set out in Article 3.

New coroner area

The following coroner areas are combined to create the new coroner area of North Yorkshire and York:

• (a) North Yorkshire (Eastern);

• (b) North Yorkshire (Western); and

• (c) York.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (Coroners Areas and Assistant Coroners) Transitional Order 2013 (S.I. 2013/1625), which came into force on 25th July 2014, constituted the former coroners’ districts under the Coroners Act 1988 (c. 13) as corresponding coroner areas under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (c. 25).

This Order combines three coroner areas into one new coroner area, called North Yorkshire and York.

A full impact assessment has not been produced for this instrument as no, or no significant, impact on the private, voluntary or public sectors is foreseen.
