The Dangerous Dogs (Designated Types) (England and Wales) Order 2023

The Secretary of State makes this Order in exercise of the powers conferred by section 1(1)(c) and (8) of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991[^f00001].
Citation, commencement and extent

- (1) This Order may be cited as the Dangerous Dogs (Designated Types) (England and Wales) Order 2023.
- (2) This Order comes into force on 31st December 2023.
- (3) This Order extends to England and Wales.
Designation for the purposes of section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991

The type of dog known as the XL Bully is designated for the purposes of section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, being a type appearing to the Secretary of State to be bred for fighting or to have the characteristics of a type bred for that purpose.
Substitution of the day appointed under section 1(3) of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991

The appointed day for the purposes of section 1(3) and (4) of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 in respect of dogs of the type designated by article 2 is 31st January 2024.

Explanatory note
(This note is not part of the Order)
EXPLANATORY NOTE
This Order designates the type of dog known as the XL Bully for the purposes of section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 (c. 65).
The Order also provides for the substitution of the day appointed under section 1(3) of that Act in respect of dogs of the type designated by this Order. The day appointed under section 1(3) is specified in article 2 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 (Commencement and Appointed Day) Order 1991 (S.I. 1991/1742) (C. 48) as 30th November 1991. Article 3 of this Order provides that the reference to this date is to be read as a reference to 31st January 2024 in respect of dogs of the type designated by this Order.
A full impact assessment has not been produced for this instrument as no, or no significant, impact on the private, voluntary or public sector is foreseen.
