The Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (Alteration of Coroner Areas) Order 2023

The Lord Chancellor, in exercise of the powers conferred by paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 to the Coroners and Justice Act 2009[^f00001], and after consulting in accordance with that paragraph, makes the following Order.
Citation and commencement

This Order may be cited as the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (Alteration of Coroner Areas) Order 2023 and comes into force on 1st April 2023.
Interpretation

In this Order—
- “coroner area” means a coroner area specified in the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (Coroner Areas and Assistant Coroners) Transitional Order 2013[^f00002];
- “new coroner area” means the new coroner area resulting from the combining of the coroner areas set out in Articles 3 and 4.
New coroner areas

The following coroner areas are combined to create the new coroner area of Newcastle and North Tyneside—
- (a) Newcastle-upon-Tyne; and
- (b) North Tyneside.

The following coroner areas are combined to create the new coroner area of West Sussex, Brighton and Hove—
- (a) West Sussex; and
- (b) Brighton and Hove.

Explanatory note

EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (Coroners Areas and Assistant Coroners) Transitional Order 2013 (S.I. 2013/1625), which came into force on 25th July 2014, constituted the former coroners’ districts under the Coroners Act1988 (c. 13)as corresponding coroner areas under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (c. 25).
This Order combines two sets of coroner areas into two new coroner areas. The Newcastle-upon-Tyne and North Tyneside coroner areas are merged to create the new coroner area of Newcastle and North Tyneside. The West Sussex and Brighton and Hove coroner areas are merged to create the new coroner area of West Sussex, Brighton and Hove.
A full impact assessment has not been produced for this instrument as no, or no significant, impact on the private, voluntary or public sectors is foreseen.
