The Smart Meters Act 2018 (Commencement) Regulations 2024

Made: 28th March 2024

The Secretary of State makes these Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by section 14(3) of the Smart Meters Act 2018[^f00001].

Citation and extent

• (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Smart Meters Act 2018 (Commencement) Regulations 2024.

• (2) These Regulations extend to England and Wales and Scotland.

Provisions coming into force on 30th April 2024

The following provisions of the Smart Meters Act 2018 come into force on 30th April 2024 —

• (a) section 11 (modification of electricity codes etc: settlement using smart meter information);

• (b) section 12 (modification under section 11);

• (c) section 13 (date from which modifications of electricity licence conditions may have effect).

Explanatory note

Explanatory Note

These Regulations bring into force sections 11 to 13 of the Smart Meters Act 2018 (“the Act”) on 30th April 2024. Section 11 of the Act relates to the modification of electricity codes by the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (“the Authority”) for the purpose of enabling or requiring half-hourly electricity imbalances to be calculated using information about customers’ actual consumption of electricity on a half hour basis. Section 12 relates to the process the Authority must follow prior to making a modification under section 11. Section 13 of the Act relates to the date from which electricity licence modifications made by the Authority, in accordance with section 13, may come into effect.

An impact assessment has not been produced for this instrument as no, or no significant, impact on the private, voluntary or public sector is foreseen.
