Explanatory Note

These Regulations are made under the Armed Forces Act 2006 (c. 52) and amend the Royal Air Force Terms of Service Regulations 2007 (S.I. 2007/650).

Regulation 2 provides for a new type of engagement, which enables persons who have reached the age of 17 years and 42 weeks to be enlisted for a term of air force service of between 12 and 24 months. Those who have enlisted on such an engagement have the right under this regulation, after the expiration of 6 months from their date of enlistment, to be discharged from air force service with no reserve liability by providing 28 days’ written notice to their commanding officer. A person on a foundation engagement may be treated as if they had enlisted on a notice engagement where written approval of the competent air force authority is obtained.

A full impact assessment has not been produced for this instrument as no, or no significant, impact on the private, voluntary or public sector is foreseen.
